When I was in sixth grade, I first learned that many children have no shoes and need to walk barefoot over grassland for several hours each day to attend school. Their families are very poor, and their schools have limited subsidies. Our tour guide was one of the founders of a particular elementary school. He uses his income as a tour guide to support the school and often brings his guests to see the school for themselves. For the first time, I was witnessing someone using his personal power to change the world. It was deeply moving. We purchased as many notebooks as we could and brought them to the school. After returning home, I recorded an online talk reflecting on this trip and shared it with my school’s student body and faculty.
